Have you ever wondered what Fashion Week is like apart from one's native city? Aside from stalking/drooling over pictures via Tumblr, Instagram and major fashion magazines, of course. I am so fortunate to be studying abroad in London this semester and discovered some of the brilliant designs that go on across the globe. London Fashion Weekend opened my eyes to a new culture of couture, class and lovely accents. Overall Review: A+ a tea and a scone.
London Fashion Weekend takes place after Fashion Week on the following Saturday and Sunday. After too many "London Fashion Week for American girls" Google-searches, my two friends and I found this weekend runway show featuring the 4 top trends to the upcoming season. However, this was not just any ordinary show. We were in London; new styles, new faces and new trends surrounded us. We were ready for some serious retail therapy.
However, after a small fee for tickets, my wallet remained firmly tucked in my bag for the remainder of the evening. Before the show started, we were given the chance to enter showrooms and shop around. But being on a student budget (or any, really!) the greatest joy was to observe amazing designer pieces.
The space was full of hip magazine displays, a makeup and nail salon, and many dressing rooms. I was so excited to see the runway show after witnessing a glimpse of the before party.
Finally it was time to hit the runway! The absolutely breathtaking runway featured four top trends: Pretty in Pink, Shape up, Naturesque, and Victoriana. Each 10-minute segment glorified specific color combinations and clothing structures. My favorite was Victoriana because the use of black and white, straight and simple pieces reminded me that transitioning into the colder seasons can still be cozy and chic.
In comparison to a runway show in New York, this show was unique in terms of models styling, the models themselves, and the tone of the entire performance. Fun music blasted through the crowd while beautiful British girls strutted their moves on the Catwalk. The styles were preppy and conservative yet a bit edgy. The show combined two of London's wonderful trademarks: high class and feminine strength.
Overall, my London Fashion Weekend experience was full of culture, creativity and exploration. I am so grateful for my time in London and I encourage everyone to travel whenever they possibly can. See fashion everywhere! Whether it be on the streets of a new city or through my lenses. For now, I will be discovering more British traditions and cuddling up next to this.......
