For the last two weeks, temperatures ranging from high eighties to nineties have slammed the East Coast, sometimes breaking out into the triple digits. With the heat thick and suffocating, nearly every fabric clings uncomfortably to sweaty skin, raising your temperature right along with sun. Lucky for you, I have the solution!
In this weather, staying cool and looking good is a tall order, especially when typical summer choices simply won’t do. I personally adore sundresses, but in this heat many of them aren’t a good option as the dresses' torsos tends to be of a snugger fit. Tight tanks and anything bodycon are another no-no for the simple reason that clingy fabrics easily become irritating in intense heat and often display embarrassing back and underarm sweat-stains within minutes. Anything super baggy pulls the risk of appearing sloppy or lazy. Thus it can be pretty tricky to pick an outfit, especially if you’re living in the city where the sidewalks radiate enough heat to fry some street eggs. But among all of the no’s is the perfect yes: big flowy printed chiffon blouses like the ones below that go flawlessly with almost anything.
These are two examples of different big chiffon styles you can wear. Nasty gal and necessary clothing, from left respectively
Whether you choose flat colors or textured crinkle surfaces, these easy, breezy, beautiful tops, (see what I did there?) can be paired with a cami, bandeau, or just a bra. Match any of these tops to a pair of shorts or cutoffs and you’re good to go! Chiffon is a very lightweight material that breathes extremely well unlike 100% cotton, spandex, or jersey. Additionally, it can very easily be dressed up or down, making it super simple and convenient for a number of occasions. The same top can carry you through work, lunch with the girls, drinks with the boys, and dinner with your parents. You can even sit outdoors at night once the weather’s cooled down.
A cluster of bracelets or layered necklaces will make the outfit appear overcrowded and clunky. Keep accessories sweet and simple instead
Chiffon tops carry over seamlessly from casual to upscale
The lightness of chiffon moves with you, and a good cut both compliments and hides. It really is the ideal solution no matter your body type; tall, skinny, short, or full, the big chiffon top is the answer to staying cool and looking good doing it. I’ve been seeing everything on the streets ranging from small black & white geometric patters to big, bright and bold florals. The goal with this look is to keep the jewelry small and minimal, leaving your skin with as much uncovered space to breathe as possible. Avoid heaping on the bangles, bracelets and rings as it will give the look an unnatural heaviness; a simple necklace with a lightweight pendant on a cord and a delicate ring or two is more than enough.
