Sydney Bellows is from Winter Park, Florida. She started Better Than A Cupcake to defeat the ever-popular counter, “You can’t start a company—you’re too young.” Not only did she prove that stereotype wrong, but she also created a venue for countless others her own age to share their talents with the fashion industry.
Sydney is passionate about showcasing the unique designs of young people and by helping them, giving back to the community at large. Sydney believes that young designers deserve prominent influence in New York fashion and in changing circumstances, the young people who have not been so lucky. She is determined to spark that influence and watch it grow.
Note From Founder:
When we wake up in the morning, we ask ourselves two things: What am I going to wear today, and what am I going to eat? We make little decisions about our fashion and our food every day, and all of these choices combine to define our styles and tastes. As someone who loves fashion and food, I’ve learned everything is good in moderation. Sometimes it’s fun to indulge in a cupcake, just like it’s fun to splurge on a dress. But there needs to be a healthy balance in all aspects of our lives. That’s what Better Than a Cupcake is all about. Cupcakes are sweet, pretty little luxuries we all enjoy like high-fashion clothes. But there’s a serious side to our company just like there’s a serious side to budgeting our money and maintaining a healthy diet.
Better Than A Cupcake (B.T.A.C.) also stands for Bold Talent Aiding Charities (B.T.A.C.). It’s a company by college students and for college students to showcase young talent. Our goal is to have a semi-annual fashion show every spring and fall featuring the lines of New York City fashion design students. We also showcase the talent of college writers, photographers and designers around the country with big city style. But BTAC is about more than fashion. It’s about individual expression and the personal experience that a cupcake provides. A cupcake is more special than a slice of cake. It’s a portion of something larger designed just for you. That’s why most of our fashion show proceeds go to helping K.I.D.S. charity provide brand new clothing for underprivileged children. We want to help all children experience that special, “I am unique” feeling that makes us crave custom clothes and reminds us we are all beautifully and wonderfully made. When a child gets a new piece of clothing that fits his or her unique style and body, it becomes more than something to wear. It becomes a small, outward expression of who that child is. It becomes Better Than A Cupcake. And that is a feeling every child deserves to taste.
