How many of you are proficient in the art of art of “quoting”? As both a creative writer and a journalist, I constantly find my days filled with both my own words and the words of others. There’s just something exhilarating about creating something through the endless vocabulary of the human language. A self-professed “Quote Queen”, I usually start off all my college research and response papers with a favorite quote or lyric that sums up exactly what I want to say, but can’t seem to on my own. One of my absolute favorites is the following by fashion-designer extraordinaire, Coco Chanel: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
Poised, elegant, creative, and downright fabulous, Coco Chanel has always been one of my go-to fashion icons, not only because of her impeccable style, but also, because of the overall message behind her famous doubled-C’ed brand. When I first got into fashion, one of the very first things I did was educate myself about Ms. Chanel. Through googling and watching Lifetime’s epic "Coco Before Chanel” TV-movie, I instantly found myself under Coco's spell. It was during this period of self-education that I first came across Chanel’s “Fashion is not...” quote. From the very first time I laid eyes on it, this quote has always stayed with me; I can even recite it by memory!
Though it isn’t as famous as Chanel’s “little black dress” quote, what drew me to this quote was Chanel’s overall message behind it: Fashion shouldn’t just be limited to clothing; it’s so much more than price tags and garment bags. Its movement, it’s art, it’s fun, it’s serious, it conveys messages, it refutes ideas, it defies gravity, you name it, I can guarantee you fashion, somehow or other, does it. Fashion just is! It can’t be defined because it surpasses absolutely everything!
If you look at my bio on the B.T.A.C. writer’s page, you’ll see that I conveyed much of the same ideas Chanel expresses in her quote in my brief biography. To me, fashion is everywhere and anywhere. You don’t need millions of dollars to enjoy fashion, you just need to be inspired! To me even something as simple as jeans and a V-neck tee-shirt conveys a message and shows inspiration. I never see fashion as just clothes or just designers, it’s not about what you’re wearing or what you decide to spend your money on, it’s about how you feel while wearing the clothes, what the clothes mean to you, and what the clothes give you. It’s not about models, or runways, or designers (even though all that stuff is really nice too), it’s about who you are while wearing what you're wearing and where you see yourself going while wearing them.
I also think Chanel’s quote and the message behind it is significant to the entire B.T.A.C. brand because it shows that you don’t have to go to an expensive fashion school to be the next Coco Chanel! Inspiration doesn’t have to be restricted to a workroom or a campus; it’s on the street, the subway, the corner store, it can even be found in graffiti! The main message is that fashion is all around us and its ours for the taking! Whether you sketch, design, construct, or simply buy clothes, you are a part of the larger culture that is fashion! Take it from Coco herself: it’s the way we live. And we couldn’t be happier about it!
